What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned how rewarding it is to take chances and how independent I can really be. I also learned a ton about people my age from all over the world. Definitely a worthwhile experience.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Not exactly an intense experience, but it allowed me to really enjoy Sweden and take off time to travel around Europe without being over-stressed about missing too much class- the perfect situation for an American exchange student.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Flogsta is a great place to live to get the real experience of a Swedish university student. It's not the best quality living arrangements, but many parties and traditions take place in the Flogsta apartments.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Groceries and alcohol are expensive

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? around $80
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Don't eat out too much, and if you plan on drinking, buy your alcohol and drink before going out because the alcohol in the nations is more expensive. If you live far away from your classes and/or the nations and you're not a fan of walking, you should invest in a bike because it will save a lot of money on bus tickets and it'll save time too.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

It was extremely easy to get by on just English, but also easy to pick up on some basic Swedish.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? 3 years of Spanish, which was irrelevant in Sweden
How many hours per day did you use the language? 0

* What could be improved?
  • Host website was not available to many students although it was required for the classes they were in
  • The bus routes are confusing if you don't have someone to explain them to you
  • Lots of vandalism at Flogsta apartments, especially during Valborg
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? To make sure to do everything in moderation and pay more attention to the prices. At one point I accidentally bought concealer for at least $40 more than I normally would have at home.
