Sweden: You've Ruined America for Me Past Review

By (Sociology., Illinois State University) for

Uppsala University: Uppsala - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes. As cliche as it sounds, I truly feel much more independent from it. It was an opportunity to meet the types of people that I never would have met before. I now have a better understanding of how other cultures view Americans, and how other cultures view themselves, which is quite a bit different than what I expected. All my plans now involve me going back to Europe after I graduate. I just feel more comfortable there. More relaxed.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

They were really well organized, and they knew how to get things done. There were a lot of foreign exchange students, though, and they were not all that accessible because of it.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I loved that my housing was in the middle of the city, and so near the university. There were other housing options that had people living miles away from the campus, but I was right by it. It was also made for really good night life, because I never had to worry about transportation, as everything was within walking distance. I needed to by sheets, but cookware and everything else was provided.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I think the student run nations are a fantastic idea, and they should have them at every university.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I never once felt unsafe. I had no problems walking around the city at night as everything was so clean and well lit. The people were so decent.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? The taxes in Sweden are high. But it is managable.
