Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Special case here. The administration was OK, and it seemed to stay afloat because other teachers were helping beyond their duties to make sure the administration was on top of things. it was a big frustrating at times, but nevertheless, all was okay at the end of the day.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I had my own apartment: a one room, by myself. I had a wonderful landlady. The housing was found by the university.

At first there were some issues with the housing that took about 3 months to handle. Once they were taken care of, it was fantastic.

* Food:

Food in germany is overall very good. The food in the mensa was very expensive, but not terrible.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Lüneburg is right next to Hamburg,so there is a lot to do. Its small enough to have a small-town feeling, but big enough so that you dont get bored. Buy a bike, and you can go anywhere in town. There is lots to do. Lots to explore.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Lüneburg is VERY safe. I would walk around the city as late as 3 in the morning and I never felt in danger. The program was very clear about how to obtain healthcare. the program also provides health insurance, so one is covered.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? No more than 50 euros should do it for groceries. Budget more if you will eat in the mensa.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I kept my bank account in america, and took out money from the atm machines. If you stay for a year, open a german bank account. Just to have it. Put 50 or so euros in there. Even if you dont think you need it, you will.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Beginner
Language acquisition improvement?

I am not able to work in a job related to my major.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Lüneburg is wonderful for the student who wants to make his own experience. You have a lot of free time, so dont waste it. Lots of students, myself included, used Lüneburg as the basis for a broader project. one student from australia was actually an artist who was exhibiting around Germany, and he needed the program in Lüneburg to better his german and simply to stay in the country. Another student was a chef exploring German cuisine. I did it as a part of a project in german lieder and opera. Dont expect to be babysat or watched all the time. The program is extremely relaxed.Some may say that it lacks structure. In my opinion, its fine just the way it is.
