Utah Valley University: London - Literature and Theater

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained such a new perspective on life, and culture, and school, theatre, people, so many things! I learned responsibility, living without my parents in a forgein country and learing to adjust. I made such great friends that I know I will keep in touch with! one hundred percent worthwhile, I wish it didnt go by so fast!

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The prep week was good, a lot of reading but it prepared us to go to LONDON! During our time in London, we didn't have a ton of homeowrk, we had to read some plays but it wasn't bad and we had plenty of time to do it. It was awesome because it didn't feel like ordinary school. We would go out and see things and write research logs on it which was just like a journal pretty much. In class, we discussed what we've learned and prepped what we were going to learn next!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We all stayed in a "flat" together! which is like an apartment, but a big apartment with different rooms and the rooms had their own bathrooms, it wa so much fun living with everyone, I'm very social so it was great bonding and all of us just chillin in the front room. It's great because its a big space if you need your alone time you can have that, but if your super social, there's always other social people in the front room, skyping or doing homework, listening to music, just doing whatever.

* Food:

we were on our own pretty much for food! it got expensive but i had two other roommates and we split our food which made it a lot cheaper and more convenient. if youre going to London, you must try a full English breakfast..yum!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

it wasnt a different language so that part was relieving for me, but it was a culture shock! it wasnt insanely different from America, but differnet enough for you to learn and have an eye opening experiance!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Great! I didn't get sick but there was a cold being passed around, there's medicine at local drugstores which you can find everywhere, and we had really good health insurance even though no one needed to use it!

* Safety:

we were in a safe area, at night a lot of people are drunk and some scary people walking around, but that's pretty much how everywhere is..just be smart and don't go out alone in the middle of the night. I went out alone a few times during the day and i was fine. there's tons of people out and about so it's not scary.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

london is EXPENSIVE. some people were able to be on a strict "college budget" while they were there but it didnt look fun at all...I'm also an impulsive buyer so i am not the best to go to for money advice! I would definitely reccomend saving all you can beforehand because you will need it!

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? No
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Share groceries with roommates! don't buy all your souveniers the first week...you will have plenty of time to do all of that.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • I loved being in LONDON, i loved the balance we had between going out and doing/seeing things, free time, school, etc. it was so organized and so much fun with the greatest group of people!
* What could be improved?
  • Planning on traveling to the foreign country together in a big group, i was the last to fly into London and I got lost!
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? How expensive London is, and I wish I would have actually follwed the packing guidelines and packed so much lighter than I did!
