This program provides students with a serious and engaged academic learning opportunity in the Chinese language, culture, history, and society through well-designed classroom instruction, one-on-one tutoring, hands-on activities, and site visits of schools, hospitals, museums, historical sites, government institutions, media firms, and NGOs. Students will also interact directly with Chinese students, scholars, professionals and Chinese people from different disciplines and industries.
Chuxiong is known for its ancient history and for having one of the greatest Yi populations in Yunnan. Splendid mountains and gorgeous rivers are features of the city and the prefecture. It is a land of beauty and marvels. There are abundant cultural resources by combining natural beauty and historical cultural relics. The Chuxiong Prefecture Museum, the Zixi Mountain National Forest Park, the Yi ethnic group's Ten-Month Solar Calendar theme park, Yi Ocean Beach Park, Fortune Pagoda, temples, among many other public parks and sightseeing spots.
Chuxiong is also best known as the excavation site of the earliest Homo sapiens in China and its distinctive landform, the Earth Forest. Together with its neighboring counties of Sichuan, most Yi ethnic people of China inhabit in this region. Besides Yi, there are many other groups like Han, Usu, Miao, Dai, Hui, Bai, Hani, Zhuang, just to name a few. All of them together present splendid and diverse ethnic cultures.
The city of Chuxiong has a population of almost 300,000 inhabitants. UVU students will have the opportunity to be involved with and learn from the 26 diverse ethnic groups as they learn their culture and practice their communicative skills. While at Chuxiong Normal University (CNU), students will receive direct instruction by trained native educators who are conducting their practicum in Chinese as a Second Language.
