Semester in Aix-en-Provence Past Review
By A student (French, Wellesley College) - abroad from 08/22/2014 to 01/17/2015 with
Wellesley College: Aix-en-Provence - Wellesley-in-Aix
I learned a lot about French literature and authors that I enjoy reading. This experience was worthwhile but I did not get as much appreciation for the French culture out of it as I had expected.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
I took one course directly through Wellesley, one second-year course, and two third-year courses and these classes were nowhere near as rigorous as Wellesley courses. In particular, the other students rarely came to class and there were no class discussions, so it was not a very rigorous or motivating environment overall. My professors were very knowledgable and gave good lectures, though. |

* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
I had very good experiences at the pharmacies in France but when I did need to see specialized doctors I had terrible experiences. I needed to see an allergist and a gynecologist while in France but I was unable to get an appointment with a specialized doctor so I had to go to a 24-hour clinic next to the university for a consultation with a general practitioner. The whole experience was confusing and I ended up waiting a couple of weeks without treatment until I was home and could see a doctor in the US. |
* Safety: |
The city was overall very safe but there was a huge amount of catcalling that made me feel very uncomfortable when I had to walk anywhere alone. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | I was living with a host family so I only spent about 10-20 euros on food during a normal week, but if I traveled for the weekend I spent more money at restaurants and on train tickets and apartments. |
