Western Washington University: Hull - EducatorsAbroad Student Teaching (EAST)

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Everything was worthwhile. Knowing that there was this small city in England that has so much potential with their students made me want to explore the world even more. The people were amazing and going home was only worth it to see my family and friends again. Traveling and experiencing other cultures has become both an academic interest and future plan of mine.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The school I worked at was Hymers College. They had only one previous EducatorsAbroad student before me, and in a different department. Despite their small amount of experience, they did remarkably well with making me feel welcome and giving me the opportunity and experience that I needed to feel confident in the field of teaching. I would highly recommend this school to any student-teacher who wants to do their internship in England.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I met with only one person from EducatorsAbroad in England, and we only met to discuss and observe my learning and teaching. He was very knowledgeable on both England and America's higher education, and was a great help in all my needs.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in a hotel owned by a lovely family that had 2 boys attending the school I was working in. As much as I loved the company and the way they treated me like family, I was expecting to be accommodated differently. Nevertheless, it was a great experience and it was close to the school so I have no other complaints.

* Food:

I ate my breakfast in the hotel with the other guests, and had lunch in the school cafeteria. Dinner was either provided for me by the owners of the hotel or I went around town and looked for places to eat. It was a great experience and I enjoyed the food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

During a 2 week Easter break, I spent some time in London and got to do the tourist thing. I had a fantastic time. England is filled with such rich history that it's amazing how long everything has lasted. I remember casually walking down the streets of London and my host told me that these were the same streets Jack the Ripper walked. It's amazing how much has happened in this country. Also, my school held a special relief concert for Japan and asked me to perform. It was an honor to play an original song on my guitar for them, and they were accepting and thrilled to have my on their stage. It was great to see students excited to see their teacher do something other than teach!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The city of Hull felt very safe, and there were no troubles. I was able to walk on the streets alone at night with no issue or fear.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I would highly recommend going out to do your student-teaching. Effective teachers need to have an open mind and full of experience so that they can accommodate for their students. Studying abroad is one way to develop those skills.
