Everything we do is about the IES Abroad student.
Created in 1950, we believe in crafting unforgettable, life-changing educational adventures that go beyond our students' expectations. Every year about 6,500 study abroad students choose IES Abroad for their authentic study and intern abroad experience.
Our work starta in our Chicago headquarters and spreads across more than 130 study abroad programs in more than 30+ locations worldwide. With this network, we develop authentic global education and life-affirming cultural experiences. We believe that studying abroad should be a part of every student's academic life, and we aim to not only provide study abroad opportunities, but to consistently maintain a friendly, fun, and safe academic and cultural environment.
We believe so firmly in the power of our academically superior programs, that we actively recruit students from diverse populations and pledges more than $5 million in scholarships year after year. We are proud that our students are as diverse and exciting as the countries we study.
Through IES Internships, we offer a variety of full-time semester and summer internships in 15 locations around the world. For more than 40 years, we've provided opportunities to intern in some of the world's most exciting cities. With IES Internships, you'll have a guaranteed placement, more on-the-job hours, dedicated assistance with résumés and interviewing skills, and the ability to network with other students.

Study Abroad with IES Abroad
"Being thrown into an entirely new culture with a distinct language and customs helped me learn to take risks and jump into things headfirst. I was able to improve my language skills, live with a wonderful Spanish family, meet new friends and soak up all of the music, culture and tapas that Spain had to offer. It was absolutely w..."

"I learned so much about myself on the trip. I am much more aware as a person, my sense of direction has greatly improved and I'm more comfortable outside of my comfort zone!"
A student Pennsylvania State University - University Park / Penn State
"I gained new travel skills that I will take with me for the rest of my life. I learned how to examine culture and how it shapes society. I also gained confidence in entering new or different situations."
A student United States Naval Academy
"My cultural understanding of both France and my home country increased tremendously. It was interesting to observe all of the things happening in the U.S. from the eyes of a different culture, and I feel like I learned more about the U.S. by being away from it. I also retained an incredible relationship with my host family, and ..."

A student Brandeis University
"My horizons were broadened perhaps most in terms of culture and academics. I was exposed to such a vibrant lifestyle through my meaningful studies about London and the world. It was challenging but incredibly worthwhile."
A student Indiana University - Bloomington
"I learned confidence, boldness, how to say yes to everything and how to say no with assurance. I learned to fail gracefully and to take on my biggest fears and stresses. I learned the value of telling stories and being open and vulnerable in an unfamiliar place."

"I learned a lot about myself as I traveled with friends and made new ones along the way! I learned that I can take care of myself as well as acclimate to a new and foreign environment. A student Indiana University - Bloomington
"This was my first time abroad, so I was very nervous going into the program. But I immediately fell in love with Granada and am so grateful to have been able to spend four months getting to know the city and its people. Life in Granada is lived in the streets, and there is always something to do and someone excited to do it. And..."

"I learned a lot about myself, and I found that I am much more confident than I thought I was. When you have to try and speak another language everyday, it teaches you to trust yourself and not be afraid of maybe saying something the wrong way. As long as you try, you will be amazed about how much your language skills grow and ho..."

"Studying abroad has been the most incredible experience of my life. It has been both challenging and rewarding. The experience of living and learning in a culture different from my own, in a language foreign to me has been one of the most thrilling times of my life! I am sad to see the experience come to an end because the many ..."

"I don't think I could have picked a better program for my needs. Apart from extensive improvement in my language skills, I gained greater insight into the daily life and culture of Japan. I found it easier to interact with local residents the more my language skills improved, and my confidence improved greatly. I gained many fri..."

"I always knew I would study abroad somewhere in Europe—the big question then became where? As I browsed through the IES options (IES being a program that worked well with my homeschool and made transferring my financial aid and grades easy!) the two countries that stood out to me were France and Ireland; France with its romantic..."

"From this experience, I was able to learn that I am capable of taking care of myself, being comfortable in a new environment, and to not be afraid to try new things. Many people say that England and America must be very similar, and while that is fairly true, there are still so many differences and unique experiences there. In ..."

"My biggest take away was that planning is futile when you aim to cover over thirteen countries in four months. As long as you have the basics to survive in all kinds of weather, some amazing people and the will to walk through an entire city in one day, you'll love this program!"
Suha G Grinnell College
"This experience was so worthwhile that I cannot even imagine what my college experience would have been without it. I can't really imagine who I would have been as a person without this experience! It is very difficult to list all of the things that I learned and gained in a short paragraph. Studying abroad is an opportunity to ..."

"I learned to live in a completely different city,to appreciate art and history more, and I loved discovering every facet of Granada and its streets.
