Everything we do is about the IES Abroad student.
Created in 1950, we believe in crafting unforgettable, life-changing educational adventures that go beyond our students' expectations. Every year about 6,500 study abroad students choose IES Abroad for their authentic study and intern abroad experience.
Our work starta in our Chicago headquarters and spreads across more than 130 study abroad programs in more than 30+ locations worldwide. With this network, we develop authentic global education and life-affirming cultural experiences. We believe that studying abroad should be a part of every student's academic life, and we aim to not only provide study abroad opportunities, but to consistently maintain a friendly, fun, and safe academic and cultural environment.
We believe so firmly in the power of our academically superior programs, that we actively recruit students from diverse populations and pledges more than $5 million in scholarships year after year. We are proud that our students are as diverse and exciting as the countries we study.
Through IES Internships, we offer a variety of full-time semester and summer internships in 15 locations around the world. For more than 40 years, we've provided opportunities to intern in some of the world's most exciting cities. With IES Internships, you'll have a guaranteed placement, more on-the-job hours, dedicated assistance with résumés and interviewing skills, and the ability to network with other students.
How will study abroad redefine you? We can't wait to find out.

"The biggest thing I gained from this program is independence in a foreign country. It's intimidating at first when you are wondering about a country and not understand what people are saying around you. However, you learn how to get around independently and develop basic conversation with individuals. I wouldn't trade thi..."

"The most important thing I think I gained from this experience was a sense of independence. As a junior I've lived away from my family for a little while but this was my first real solo travel experience. As I write this I am actually still in New Zealand a month after the end of my program and will still be here for another two..."
Sarah R Western Washington University
"I learned how to get around a big city, improve my German vastly. I learned so many things they are hard to list. It is definitely worthwhile!"

"I learned to speak spanish and I learned to be tranquilo"
Andrew S Bentley University
"I gained a better sense of self, and surprisingly a greater appreciation for the States. In learning about another culture, you find out what you like and dislike about your own. Also, it opened my mind to a lot of new ideas. You also get to meet people that you would never have the opportunity to meet otherwise. "
A student Indiana University - Bloomington
"I definitely loved studying abroad, especially here in Nantes. No one speaks English like in Paris and my host family was great. The university was fun and I made good French friends. The only thing I would change is studying abroad through a program like IES, I realize now that I would have learned way more french and had a bet..."
A student University of the Pacific
"The experience was definitely worthwhile for me. I enjoyed living in a different country and experiencing a different culture (although I didn't feel as immersed as I would have liked to have been.) I learned that I can be on my own and navigate around a foreign place"
A student California State University - East Bay
"I learned about being on my own, I learned more about myself. I developed a better idea of what im passionate about. It was more then worthwile. "
Kara S Trinity University
"The distance from familiarity and complete engulfment into another very different culture caused me to reflect consistently on my life and how my interactions, and this of others, affect the world. I learned what to value in one culture and what to learn from certain values that did not correlate with my ideas. I learned how thr..."

"It was great, I had a wonderful time and am looking at programs to teach abroad so I can return! I often reminisce about my time and look at pictures wishing I could go back right now. "
A student Trinity University
"It was worthwhile. I gained a strong sense of culture in the Arab world and a sense the conflict between tradition and modernity on a personal level. "
Jessie D Trinity University
"I loved my experience abroad. I learned to be more confident in myself, to trust myself in stressful situations, that I can get around using my foreign language skills, that there are friends to be had everywhere if you know where to look. I would suggest to anyone to go abroad! It opened my eyes to a more global worldview and m..."
Caitlin B Trinity University
"I learned how to travel alone and have fun with it, rather than stressing too much. It taught me how to be flexible, things will not always work out as planned but they will most likely work out in some way. This experience was invaluable, and has made me a much more independent person. "
A student Trinity University
"I think I definitely caught a travel bug, because now all I want to do is go places. I also really enjoyed interacting with the people. Learning about there history, both postive and negative, was eye-opening, because the similarities with our own history made me question things that I'd gotten so used to I'd kinda stopped think..."
A student Trinity University
"Yes it was definitely worthwhile. I learned so much about a different (and wonderful) culture and it changed how I view the world. "
A student Trinity University
"I learned that no matter what the situation is, I will be okay. A theme from our Institute was "have personal Teflon," because you will undoubtedly have some strange situations. I was stranded in Paris, but I made it back to Vienna alright. There were some awkward "lost in translation" moments, but you don't let them stick to..."
A student Vanderbilt University
"I learned a lot about a culture very different from the American culture. I got to know a lot of amazing people and got to know places I thought I would never see. Overall, just having the experience of living alone in such an amazing city, is an something priceless."
Alvaro G Trinity University
"I learned how to cook basic things (Austrian), how to dance the waltz, and mainly how to live by myself. I learned how to deal with problems that occur commonly in life and no parents are around to solve them for me... I feel rich with experience of life. It was very much worthwhile!"
A student Trinity University
"I learned more about the world and broadened my perspective."
A student Trinity University
"I would say I'm more outgoing and adventurous now. Spanish lifestyle is fairly laidback you have to go with the flow. They have this saying in Madrid "No pasa nada". Madrileños say it all the time. It means "Don't worry about it. Everything's gonna be okay". Even though it made my senior year schedule slightly less flexible, goi..."

"I learned so much- about Germany, the German language, and most importantly, about myself. I challenged myself on a daily basis, and yes, sometimes it was scary, but it was so worthwhile. I may not have returned home a fluent speaker, but I did come back with not only better German skills but also a great appreciation for the wo..."

"I learned so much, it is hard to pinpoint. Coming from the Midwest and having never been out of the country, it really opened my eyes to so many new experiences. "
