Adelante: Edinburgh - Ecological Conservation Summer Program in Scotland

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
This was my second time abroad and I would recommend going abroad any chance you get.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I didn't have any experience with the health care system in Scotland so it's hard to say how well it is. Although the staff did look out for our safety and would have helped immediately.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

We were fed at the cafeteria every day, which was included in the cost of the program, and that cut down on food cost a lot. Food there cost a little more than it does in the US, much like everything else in the UK.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 40-60 pounds a week
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? If you have the ability to, go to a grocery store to buy food rather than eating out all of the time. Also depending on how much you are planning to travel I would advise looking to buying a train pass rather than buying one each time.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

About how many local friends did you make that you will likely keep in touch with? 0

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Bird ringing
  • Site seeing
  • The views from the tops of wee hills
* What could be improved?
  • Food
  • Organization
  • More diverse work in ecology
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I like to keep things more of a surprise while traveling abroad for the most part because it makes the experience there a little more worthwhile. Although I wish I would have known how hard it was going to be to get a taxi back to the college. Also, the first two weeks we were there had been cooler and rained more than I was expecting.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
