CIEE: Amman - Language and Culture

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I became more optimistic on my outlook of life and learned to be flexible when dealing with others. Living in Amman broke my habit of being the "fast paced, in control American."

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The CIEE staff was extremely informative and welcoming. No complaints!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Our apartment was in a dull neighborhood with constant construction. One bedroom had a king bed and the other a twin. All of the furniture was falling apart.

* Food:

All of the food was delicious, both at restaurants and available to prepare from the grocery!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

CIEE offered several opportunities to meet Jordanians.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Jordanians on the street often catcall and sometimes touch, but nothing too hostile. Someone did break into a student's apartment, however.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Paying for taxis to/from campus AND food for every meal was expensive. Also, paying for internet/phone cards was a hassle.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $120
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Split cabs, go to the CIEE events for free food, Spinney's and Carrefour has the cheapest groceries, buy alcohol at stores NOT at the bar.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Intermediate
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Nothing
How many hours per day did you use the language?
