St. Petersburg: Museum under an open sky Past Review
By Erica J (Russian and Spanish Languages, Trinity University) for
CIEE: St. Petersburg - Russian Language
My Russian abilities significantly increased thanks to my time in Russia, even if I made more language improvement outside of my classes rather than in them. I also had the great opportunity to travel both in Russia and the surrounding area, which I will never forget.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The workload was as I had expected-- a little bit of work every day to be completed outside of class, in addition to four major papers. The professors were generally very withdrawn from the student body, and mainly taught with hour-and-a-half lectures and movies that were above our comprehension level. I believe that only a minority of my classes truly hold up to the level of academic expectations held by my home university. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Provided adequate support, program size was too large for the facilities available, my expectations were not met, negative reports about professors voiced by students were not addressed in time for us to benefit (ie: before we left the program). Group leaders were often late for excursions, occasionally left whole portions of the group behind in early city exploration activities (I assume this was because of the program size). Did not chastise students for extreme behavior which resulted in very uncomfortable/inappropriate situations. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Host family provided all essentials, and treated me incredibly well. My apartment was located fairly far away from the central city area, including the university, and required about 4 hours of travel daily. |
* Food: |
St. Petersburg has affordable and tasty food which can be found virtually throughout the city. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
CIEE organized many wonderful field trips including trips to the religious monastic island of Valaam, Moscow and Kiev, in addition to a number of smaller cities directly outside of St. Petersburg. Unfortunately the staff was not very active in managing the group, did not provide us with much information about the cities we visited-- the main manager was even absent for the majority of our Moscow trip to attend a concert, leaving the rest of leaders understaffed and unavailable for student support. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
Many students became ill during the program and were taken very well care of by CIEE and outside institutions. I did not have any personal experiences however. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | $30-50 at the most, not counting my expenditures on the free travel week. All expenditures went towards food and drinks, generally related to socializing with friends outside of class. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | I wish I would have been told of the ~$40 a month travel expenses involved with the public transport I had to take to get to school every day. |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
Language acquisition improvement? |
I practiced the language with everyone. I did have to use the language in daily interactions. Most people spoke very little English. |
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition? |

Individual Course Reviews
Course Name/Rating: |
Comparative Cultural Studies: The United States and Russia |
Course Department: | POLI3001 |
Instructor: | Sherstobitov |
Instruction Language: | Russian |
Comments: | Inexcusable. Did not teach any subject material. Relied almost entirely on videos which surpassed the language comprehension skills of the class, or on the professor's personal anecdotes (during which he would emphasize his black market entrepreneurship during the 1990's without providing any historical context, let alone a comparative historical context). The class was, according to the syllabus, to be centralized on frequent physical, roundtable discussions between the Russian study body and the visting Americans, in which different political themes would be discussed-- this NEVER happened, and therefore a comparative dialogue about US and Russian political cultures was impossible. The professor often took phone calls and smoke breaks during class. He also would switch to English despite being asked on various occasions to continue speaking in Russian. |
