Acting in Dublin: Amazing Place, People and Plays Past Review
By Grace H (HISTORY., University of Michigan - Ann Arbor) for
IES Abroad: Dublin Direct Enrollment - National Theatre School of Ireland-Gaiety School of Acting
I did not think Ireland would be much different then the US. Don't be fooled by the fact they speak English. The folklore and history is captivating.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
There was a lot of work, but it paid off in the end. The theater teaching methods are directing-heavy, which concerned me at certain times. However, I learned an enormous amount of information and skill by the end of the six weeks. Additionally, we went on cultural trips around Ireland, which also enhanced my experience. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Incredible. I have never felt more safe in a foreign country than with the IES staff. We were given freedom, but had a safe place to go if we needed anything. I got the shingles and a staff member picked me up, took me to the doctors, helped me get my medicine and followed up with me on a number of occasions. I knew I was in good hands with IES. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
The apartment was fully equipped and in the best location. A five minute walk to class and Temple Bar, the center of Dublin's nightlife. |
* Food: |
The IES dinners were amazing. The rest was fend for yourself. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Dublin is full of life and great craic! (craic means fun) The acting school Irish students embraced us with open arms. I feel like we truly made friends with the locals in that sense. Many people complain about programs where they literally only meet Americans. This was not the case. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
See the shingles episode above. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
