Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | My financial aid traveled with me, but I paid out of pocket for expenses such as off campus food, travel, bar tabs, etc. Some advice that I gave to students the other night at a study abroad $$$ panel 1. Plan ahead for travel or sightseeing, see if you can book in advance and use student discounts. A lot of places will take student IDs and give nice discounts! Always carry that ID. 2. If you go on a night out, try not to use your credit card, but bring cash and limit how much cash you bring. It’s easier to keep track of how much physical cash you are spending. 3. Call your bank in advance and chat about best ways to avoid bank fees. Some cards are more widely accepted than others and some have heftier transaction fees. 4. Don’t keep all your $ in the same place —especially in countries that are infamous for pick pocketing. 5. Invest in experiences, not stuff! I’m glad I had the opportunity to do new things and I’m glad I saved towards those experiences. You only study abroad once (usually) so make the most of it by saving for one nice thing! |

The Avid AdventurerThe wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal. |
