A student studying abroad with JCMU Japan Center: Faculty-led May Short Programs
I was already studying Japanese history, but I never knew just how influential the Shiga Prefecture area was before taking the Crossroads of Japan course! The experience was both incredibly enlightening and extraordinarily fun, and I would go back on the program in a heartbeat if I could. - Michigan State University View Entire Review

Add Japan to your academic plan on one of our travel-oriented short programs!

Spend 2-3 weeks during the summer in Japan on one of our 3-credit faculty-led short programs (listed below). These courses are taught entirely in English, and students of all majors are welcome. Please note program offerings change on an annual basis depending on which faculty we work with, so keep an eye out for what we offer next year if none of this year's programs interest you.

Past programs offered: (as of 2020)

Criminal Justice in Japan
Japan is routinely recognized as one of the safest countries in the world. This course will explore both the criminal justice system and the culture of Japan that contribute to that recognition. Visits to various criminal justice entities, including policing organizations, courts, a prison, and a juvenile detention center will allow you a first-hand glimpse of the Japanese system. On this program, you will learn about Japanese culture and history in a classroom setting as well as through cultural events and field trips to Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, and Hiroshima. Local trips will include Hikone Castle, Omihachiman, and a boat ride on Lake Biwa.

Entrepreneurship in Japan
This program will focus on generating great ideas and developing great plans for action by creating and testing viable business models through customer discovery and market research. Working in teams with Japanese medical students, you will develop a concept for a medical product, device or service and marketing strategy. Your team will have the opportunity to present your work to Japanese entrepreneurs and business people.
