The Oxford Experience (Middlebury Edition) September 15, 2023
By A student (Classics, Middlebury College) - abroad from 01/04/2023 to 04/15/2023 with
Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury – CMRS Oxford Humanities Program
I learned resilience and independence from my time abroad. All at once, I found myself responsible for meals, cooking, laundry, time management, and so many other things that I took for granted at Middlebury. Students are certainly far more in control of their academic journeys at Oxford, and though daunting at first, I grew to appreciate it.

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | None |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
My time at Oxford was profoundly academically enriching, namely the tutorial system which ensured a close and personally-tailored education in all my areas of study. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The admin staff was always helpful if I ever had any questions and helped me settle into the new routine faster. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I liked my living arrangements; the dorm setup made it feel like college and also helped us form close connections. |
* Food: |
The main food option was cooking yourself but I mainly found myself outsourcing meals. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
As I was studying abroad in an English-speaking country, the local culture felt familiar and easy to integrate into. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
The healthcare insurance system was made clear to us and easily accessible when needed. |
* Safety: |
I felt mostly safe in our city and nothing of note occurred. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
Overall, my experience at Oxford was the most academically enriching and fulfilling time of my student life. However, I call my experience there the "Middlebury Experience," because while I was able to engage with Oxford professors and the occasional Oxford student through clubs and certain classes, I rarely spent time with anyone other than American, Middlebury students. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
As I mostly outsourced my food by buying meals or daily groceries, I spent quite a large amount on food throughout the term, but there are others who were able to budget more effectively. |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | I spent about 70 pounds on food a week. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | I would encourage future students to set a budget prior to arrival and sticking to it. |

* Did your program have a foreign language component? | No |

A Look Back
* What did you like most about the program? |
|
* What could be improved? |
|
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | I wish I managed my expectations about how immersed I would be in Oxford culture. It felt like we were a satellite school, quasi-independent of even Keble College, yet still affiliated. |
