Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury – CMRS Oxford Humanities Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was a life-changing experience that immersed me in academia like never before. I especially like the tutorial system because it keeps you accountable and allows for personalized attention, allowing significant improvement and pushing of boundaries. Building relationships with teachers and benefiting from one-on-one instruction has been invaluable for my learning journey.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The academic journey was truly intense yet incredibly enriching. I thoroughly enjoyed both of my tutorials, especially the academic freedom to delve into topics of personal interest within the weekly essay assignments.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The host country program administration was okay. They managed the basics adequately, like accommodations and some activities. Would have loved to do more as a group.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The accommodations met the basic requirements, but there were some aspects that could have been improved upon. Being closer to our commons would have allowed us to get more involved with the Oxford University community.

* Food:

I would have preferred more opportunities to dine in the commons hall with Oxford students, but unfortunately, most of the time, I had to cook every meal. It would have been nice to have more variety and convenience in food options.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Due to the short duration and intense academic focus of the program, there was barely any time available to get involved in local groups or activities. As a result, I didn't feel very integrated with the local culture. While I tried to immerse myself when possible, the constraints of the program limited my opportunities for deeper cultural engagement.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Fortunately, I didn't encounter any health issues during the program, so I can't comment on how well they were addressed.

* Safety:

Overall, Oxford felt reasonably safe, but like any major city, it's important to remain aware of your surroundings. I generally felt safe during my time there.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I understand the need for academic focus, but I truly wish there was more time to immerse myself in the university experience. With the program spanning only four months (January-April) and limited breaks (just a few days), there's little opportunity to engage with the people, culture, and diversity of the city, which I believe is incredibly valuable while studying abroad. Extending the program duration, aligning it with the university's standard programming until June, would greatly improve our ability to connect with the community.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Most of the time, we found ourselves cooking our own meals, which was the norm given the restrictions of our visas in the UK. This situation posed challenges, especially for those without extensive support, as the inability to work added another layer of difficulty to getting enough funding.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Around 80 dollars/week.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? My advice would be to cook the majority of your meals and eat out less frequently, save whatever you can to explore the country!

Research Project in Economics

Course Department: Economics
Instructor: Mimi Goodall
Instruction Language: English
Comments: I genuinely loved the topic I chose, especially since my supervisor was in the midst of their PhD dissertation on a closely related subject to my own investigation. The grading system, only based on the final paper, allowed for multiple rounds of editing and feedback, transforming the process of writing this long paper into a super enjoyable and enriching experience. This experience really encouraged me to write my own thesis later on.
Credit Transfer Issues: No issues, they counted the research project as an Economics elective.
