Middlebury’s program in Beijing offers students the opportunity to develop advanced Mandarin proficiency through intensive language instruction, content courses taught in Chinese, and direct engagement with local communities. Guided by the Middlebury Language Pledge, participants use Chinese in every aspect of daily life, building confidence and fluency both inside and outside the classroom.
Students study alongside peers and faculty at one of Beijing’s leading universities, gaining insight into contemporary Chinese society, history, politics, economics, and culture while navigating daily life in a vibrant global capital. Beyond academics, the program encourages exploration of Beijing’s historic neighborhoods, world-renowned cultural landmarks, and dynamic arts and culinary scenes, providing countless opportunities to deepen language skills through meaningful intercultural experiences. Combining rigorous academics with immersive learning, Middlebury in Beijing prepares students to engage thoughtfully and effectively with China and the broader Chinese-speaking world.
