Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury in Santiago

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned new skills in areas that I had been wanting to gain.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I really enjoyed the Middlebury program director and staff. An issue I found myself facing was the options for courses my host university was offering to study abroad students. There wasn't much variety across disciplines, and I had to externally ask for permission to take classes that weren't being offered for study abroad students.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The Middlebury School in Chile staff were all amazing and helpful when it came to answering my questions and making my experience enjoyable.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I did not have a close relationship with my host mom. I found myself feeling uncomfortable several times due to comments being made, their was also lack of variety of the food that I was being fed. I personally felt that the rent I was paying was not equivalent to the experience I was having. Additionally, my host mom did not provide cultural opportunities such as going to exploring places together and learning about the culture. Given that I am a native Spanish speaker, the language piece of living at home was not an issue. However, I do think I would have had more cultural experience living with Chilean university students in an apartment.

* Food:

The food was not to my liking. My host mom would feed me the same food every two weeks. At times the food also lacked flavor and seasoning. Although my host mom said I could use the kitchen to cook, I found myself not having time, and she would express that food was really expensive and imply that it was expensive having me live with her. Thus, I did not want to be a burden by asking her to purchase certain food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I did not feel too integrated with the local culture. Given that I was staying in one of the nicer neighborhoods, it was very gentrified and there weren't a lot cultural activities happening to my knowledge. Additionally, it was difficult making friends at my host university because I came in during their second semester, the majors are very cliquey, and not many people were open to making new friends.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I did not have healthcare issues while abroad. However, I had friends who did, and they expressed positive feedback regarding their experience.

* Safety:

I felt relatively safe walking around in the city, however, I was constantly making sure to protect my electronics from getting stolen.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I really enjoyed the Middlebury Program, however, if I were to do it again, I would come with a different mindset and goals for myself.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I would say a 3. As a low-income student, affordability abroad was a factor in my experience. Although my financial aid package traveled with me, it only covered one-third of the total amount I spent during my time abroad. I was lucky enough to have work during the school year and before I left for study abroad because I was able to use the money I made. However, I had to be very strict with myself about what I would spend money on because I didn't have anyone else providing income sustain me financially while abroad

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $5-20
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I would encourage students to do the 50%: needs, 30%: wants 20%: trips. I found this to be very helpful

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

We signed a language pledge to only speak Spanish during our time abroad.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Fluent
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Fluent
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? 347
How many hours per day did you use the language? 10+

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Going on our program trip
  • Making friends with students from other schools back in the States
  • Talking courses I that are not offered at my home university
* What could be improved?
  • Access to classes
  • I would appreciate if we could see profiles of the host families and possibly rank them before being assigned to one.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish the topic regarding financial accessibility would be more openly spoken and mention when talking about study abroad, especially for low-income students like myself.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Quechua Language & Culture I

Course Department: Letters
Instructor: Alipio Pacheco C
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: The class was challenging at times. Given that there was very few of us, the class didn't have a community, which would have been helpful to study/practice together. Additionally, the class would only meet twice a week, which made it difficult to establish fluency in the language like it is at Middlebury College.

LA RESISTENCIA DE LAS IMÁGENES. REGISTRO, ARCHIVO Y MEMORIA

Course Department: Design
Instructor: Marcela Parada
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: I found the class very interesting and informative given that I learned a lot about Chile's dictatorship and the effects post dictatorship. This was the professor's first time teaching the course which led to it being disorganized at times. I found that the reading and assignments were not as challenging as the ones at my home institution. I was also able to use one of the skills I had learned in one of my classes at Middlebury. We had to use Illustrator since it was a Design course. I had learned how to use it previously which was helpful for completing the assignments.

FOTOGRAFIA DE RETRATO

Course Department: Art
Instructor: Carolina Larrea
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: I really enjoyed the class! I have been wanting to challenge my photography skills for a while. However, given that their are no pre-requirements to take photography classes at Middlebury, I found myself not being challenge enough. This class challenge me to think more about my portraiture practice through different assignment prompts and workshops with the professor and assistant. professor.

PROCESOS FOTOGRAFICOS ALTERNATIVOS

Course Department: Art
Instructor: Marcela Mocanda
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: The class was challenging at times, however, I am very pleased with my experience and everything that I learned about alternative photographic practices. The course content was exactly what I was looking for, especially because Middlebury does not offer a course similar to this. One of the issues I found myself facing was the lack of space availability given that the university had assigned times that I could use the space. Majority of the assignments where done at my host house, which was not very convenient. Additionally, I found myself spending a lot of my weekends working on the assignments, thus making it difficult to explore the city and do cultural activities. Furthermore, I did spend an amount of money I was not planning on spending, despite the professor helping me my providing some materials. I would have liked it if Student Access and Support Grants could also travel with me to address this barrier.
