About
The Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR) was founded in 1814 as the University of Santo Tomás. The main campus, which is located in a section of San Jose called San Pedro, is where MLSA students at the UCR will study. It is surrounded by governmental organizations, commercial banks, hotels, movie theaters, malls, primary, secondary and higher education schools, a large residential area and housing for diplomatic representatives and international organizations.
In the four-week program students take two courses for a total of 90 contact hours and six semester credits. Courses are taught in Spanish and focus on Spanish language, culture, linguistics and methodology. Courses are available at the undergraduate and graduate level. Students live with Costa Rican host families for a full linguistic and cultural immersion experience.
MLSA also offers custom internships in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Modern Language Studies Abroad (MLSA) Scholarships
Awards for students who demonstrate a strong interest in study abroad in Spain or Costa Rica and who are pursuing a major or minor in Spanish.
Up to $500
Deadlines:
March 31 for Summer Programs
Guidelines/Requirements:
- Be pursuing a major or minor in Spanish and demonstrate interest in studying abroad in Costa Rica or Spain.
- Have been accepted into the MLSA program.
- Write an essay on "Why I want to Study Abroad." No minimum length required.
- Have a GPA of 3.30.
- Submit an official college transcript.
- Submit a letter of recommendation from one of your Spanish teachers.
