About
Landscape and Livelihood is a 16-credit field program that immerses students in the working landscapes of Western Montana. These glacier-carved mountains and valleys are home to a diverse suite of wildlife, the headwaters of North America, expansive forests and farm lands, and dispersed rural communities. We invite students to study the complexities of natural resource management through experience. The semester is divided into five classes: Forests and Communities, Agriculture and Sustainability, Biogeography, Watershed Dynamics, and a Community Conservation Project. Students will explore the relationships between rural livelihoods and natural resource conservation and learn strategies that transform challenges into opportunities for sustainability. We believe that a deep understanding of ecological processes combined with empathy for human communities leads to innovative and thoughtful stewardship. Landscape and Livelihood develops practical and analytical conservation skills that you can take anywhere. Make lasting connections. Make Montana your classroom.

Swan Valley Connections Scholarships
Swan Valley Connections maintains a scholarship fund for students who would otherwise be unable to attend one of our academic-credit field programs. Scholarships from our general fund are based on a combination of financial need and academic merit and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Our Agnes Beck Memorial Scholarship is reserved for students who currently have in-state status at any Montana university.
Typically, our awards range from $500 to $1500 depending on fund availability and financial need
