Toucan Education Programs International Medical Electives: Hands-on Clinical Experience in Belize

Program Overview: Global Health & Clinical Immersion

Toucan Education Programs offers a high-impact, supervised clinical elective designed for medical students from the UK, Australia, and Europe seeking practical experience in a global health setting.

This program provides a unique opportunity for hands-on clinical observations and procedures at a host hospital or clinic in Belize. Placements are tailored to meet your individual learning objectives, academic requirements, and clinical interests (including General Medicine, Pediatrics, Emergency Care, and more).

With flexible program durations of 3, 4, and 6 weeks, you can align this career-defining experience with your clerkship schedule.

Academics & Outcomes:

  • Customized Clinical Rotations: Engage in supervised rotations for a minimum of 24–30 hours per week, learning to adapt your skills in a resource-limited environment.
  • Core Learning Objectives: Develop a deep understanding of global health ethics, the challenges of providing care in a resource-limited setting, and the impact of social determinants of health in a new culture.
  • Intercultural Competence: Complete the Intercultural Learning Co-Curriculum (ILC) to navigate cultural norms, improve patient communication, and enhance your professional skills.
  • Assessment for Credit: Your performance is assessed based on weekly digital journal submissions, a mid-term review, and a Final Presentation, all guided by a Program Academic Director.
  • Admission Requirements: Applicants must have completed their core clinical clerkship and submit a Curriculum Vitae (CV), a Letter of Recommendation, and an official transcript.
