About
UConn in Martinique is a new winter intersession study abroad program that will give students an interdisciplinary introduction to the Caribbean, and the French Caribbean in particular, while based on the beautiful island of Martinique. Situated in the Lesser Antilles, with the islands of Dominica to the north and Saint Lucia to the south, Martinique measures 431 square miles and is a mountainous, tropical island, with miles of sandy beaches. The island has a rich and complex history, and is an important site from which to study colonial and post-colonial literature, music, dance and politics of the entire Caribbean. The three-week program, led by UConn French and Francophone Studies professor, Roger Celestin, will also explore the crucial role and impact of globalization on the arts, economy, and environment of the Caribbean. All coursework and activities will be conducted in English.
