The trip was absolutely worthwhile! This was the first time that I had an educational experience where I was able to understand what I was learning in the classroom by exploring the local culture and history of a place. About
Summer Semester, Bologna, Italy From Bologna to Blogosphere: A History of Written Correspondence
The University of Bologna is the oldest continuously operating university in the world; it is also the birthplace of letter-writing conventions that persist to the present day. Two of its illustrious alumni and avid letter writers, Dante and Petrarch, will provide the point of departure for our study of the fascinating history of the rules that govern written correspondence - a history that can be traced from the handwritten letter to today’s Facebook status update. In this course, students will examine the various lives of written correspondence from its origins in medieval Bologna to its digital environments in the texts and tweets of today in order to identify the rhetorical principles that shape interactions between writers and their audiences over time, and to assess the implications for our understanding of the past, present, and future of social networks.
