About
Located where the Jialing and Yangtze rivers merge, the city of Chongqing has a rich history dating back more than two thousand years. Chongqing is one of only four Chinese cities to be considered a direct-controlled municipality, giving it equal political standing with the provinces. Rich in natural resources, the city has historically been a major inland trading port, and because of its strategic location, it is considered an integral part of China’s Western development strategy.
Visit the beautiful Three Gorges area and enjoy the remarkable scenery or view the amazing Dazu Rock Carvings, ancient religious carvings and sculptures depicting Buddhist, Confucian, and Taoist symbols and figures. In the city itself, you can visit the People’s Liberation Monument or the city’s zoo, which features a number of exotic native animals, such as giant pandas or the rare South China tiger. Imagine the unique opportunity to learn about China and further your legal education at the same time!
In consultation with the Office of Student Affairs, participating students will register for one semester of classes at Southwest University of Political Science and Law in Chongqing; many classes are offered in English. Most English language classes involve international law, business law, or Chinese law, but other English-speaking classes are often available. Chinese language instruction is available, but does not count for law school credit. Participating students have earned 12-13 credits during their semesters in Chongqing.
Students participating in the program are provided housing, although they are free to seek off-campus housing.
Students may participate after their first three semesters of law school. Due to the Chinese academic calendar, students cannot participate in this program during their final semester. For approval, strong academic performance is preferred—and a healthy sense of adventure is required!
