YES - I learned so much about South Africa and its history, its present, and its racial and social issues. It is a fascinating, beautiful country filled with pleasant people. My study abroad experience was absolutely worthwhile, I wish I could have done a second semester because I loved it so much. Absolutely worthwhile. My time in Africa had a profound impact on me, but you might have to leave Cape Town for your world to be rocked. Even if you never left Cape Town, though, you could hang out on beaches and in botanical gardens with interesting and smart people in a really amazing city and eat really fabulous food and go... - University of Notre Dame View Entire Review

There is no way to describe the experience and do it justice. If you are on the fence about going abroad, just go. Of course it will be worthwhile. When during college will you have another opportunity to see things completely outside of what you have made them to be? I wish I could have stayed longer. I wish I had hung out with more South Africans. I wish I hadn't offended so many people with my ignorance. I wish I had attended more class and studied harder. I wish I had asked for more help. South Africa is complicated and beautiful. - University of Pennsylvania View Entire Review
My study abroad experience was the best, and it a lot of ways I think I really got lucky meeting my group of locl friends. They were always so eager to show me around and we all enjoy traveling and driving so we would take drives to all these places. I think by making local friends, I got to go, see and do a lot more things than... - Wellesley College View Entire Review
Everything beyond interstudy and UCT was awesome. South Africa is wonderful, I'd go back in a heartbeat. However, as for dealing with either of those programs - I could do without that again. - University of Pennsylvania View Entire Review

About

The University of Cape Town is the oldest and most prestigious university in South Africa. It is one of the continent's leading teaching and research institutions. UCT offers courses and majors in almost every discipline. For beautiful views of the Western Cape, students can hike up Table Mountain and experience the many beautiful mountain ranges surrounding Cape Town. The University of The Western Cape (UWC) is a public institution that was established in 1959 for non white students during the Apartheid era. UWC is located just 12 miles north of the city of Cape Town in the Tygerberg suburb of Belleville. UWC is committed to excellence in teaching, learning and research, and to nurturing cultural diversity within higher education in South Africa.

  • South Africa has 11 official languages. The language used for business and media communications is English. Other languages included isiZulu, isiXhosa, and Afrikaans.

  • South Africa features pretty much all ecosystems, including deserts, wetlands, mountains, forests, subtropical coastal areas, and grasslands, to name a few.

  • Cape Town is a very LGTBQ+ friendly city and is known internationally as the “pink destination.” The city hosts several Pride parades and festivals throughout the year.

  • South Africa provides solid proof that humans originated in Africa. Remains discovered in 2013 are thought to be much older than 160,000 years, making these the oldest remains ever discovered.

  • Cape Town’s Table Mountain is thought to be one of the oldest mountains on the planet at around 260 million years old. Today, it’s one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World.
