IES Abroad is a program provider offering 119 abroad programs. Programs offered include Study Abroad, Internship, Intensive Language, and Online Program abroad programs in 18 countries such as Australia, Austria, France, and Germany.
Everything we do is about the IES Abroad student.
Created in 1950, we believe in crafting unforgettable, life-changing educational adventures that go beyond our students' expectations. Every year about 6,500 study abroad students choose IES Abroad for their authentic study and intern abroad experience.
Our work starta in our Chicago headquarters and spreads across more than 130 study abroad programs in more than 30+ locations worldwide. With this network, we develop authentic global education and life-affirming cultural experiences. We believe that studying abroad should be a part of every student's academic life, and we aim to not only provide study abroad opportunities, but to consistently maintain a friendly, fun, and safe academic and cultural environment.
We believe so firmly in the power of our academically superior programs, that we actively recruit students from diverse populations and pledges more than $5 million in scholarships year after year. We are proud that our students are as diverse and exciting as the countries we study.
Through IES Internships, we offer a variety of full-time semester and summer internships in 15 locations around the world. For more than 40 years, we've provided opportunities to intern in some of the world's most exciting cities. With IES Internships, you'll have a guaranteed placement, more on-the-job hours, dedicated assistance with résumés and interviewing skills, and the ability to network with other students.
How will study abroad redefine you? We can't wait to find out.

Study Abroad with IES Abroad
"I learned so much. I learned that I could navigate the world on my own with minimal help. I learned I can adapt and adjust to changing circumstances. It was the most worthwhile thing I've ever done."
Laura American University
"Chile made me not only a stronger academic student (I took classes at the university), but gave me opportunities to meet locals, live with an amazing host family and learn more culture, practice lots of Spanish (as the general public rarely speaks English), and see beautiful landscape (Atacama Desert, Patagonia, Chiloé island). ..."
A student Cornell University
"As cliche as it may be, I learned to seize the day. Each day in New Zealand, I felt like I needed to go out and explore and just make the most of the day. Being so blessed to have the opportunity to study in such a beautiful country, I knew that I should not take any day for granted. "
Camille Natividad Indiana University - Bloomington
"Study Abroad not only significantly improved my Spanish and gave me a greater cultural understanding of Spain, but it also increased my self-confidence so much. For the first time, I lived by myself in a completely new city where I knew nobody and ended up having the most incredible experience of my life. "
Hayley Santaflorentina Connecticut College
"I learned how to be independent and had to go out of my comfort zone in many situations. You learn how to make friends easily when you are in a place where no one knows each other. "
EM M Connecticut College
"SO MANY THINGS. How to be independent. What self-care looks like. Where I find my identity. About my faith. How important it is to be uncomfortable. What it means to be culturally aware. I could go on and on, but in short it was absolutely worthwhile."
Mikaela Purdue University
"I didn't know anybody when going into the program and left with so so many new friendships, many of which will last forever. I learned to step out of my comfort zone and speak to people you don't know. I became pretty proficient in backpacking and planning travel/hikes. "
A student Texas Christian University
"You learn a lot about yourself and it was the best decision I have ever made."
William Southern Methodist University
"Being on my own for so long and so far away from home got me out of my comfort zone and increased my self confidence and knowledge of the world. Extremely worthwhile, going abroad was the best thing I could have ever done for myself!"
Adele Aviles Southern Methodist University
"I definitely gained a different perspective while I was abroad. What really helped me do this and understand Italy and Italians better were my four Italian history classes I took, they gave me a better understanding of how Italy came to be and why it is the way it is."
A student Villanova University
"As an international student studying in the US, I had a different approach to "studying abroad". I was already abroad so why would I go? Well, I'm glad I did! For me, it wasn't my first time traveling or staying at a different country for more than a month. For me, it was a great opportunity to be back at a culture that is relat..."
Yasemin Tekgurler Davidson College
"This experience really sparked my interest for traveling and taught me so much about how international health care and human rights is viewed. I got hands on experience in the medical field in Jamaica, I was able to travel all over Europe for a very affordable price, and I got to volunteer with CLAPA. IES really catered to my in..."
Jorden Alex University of Missouri - Columbia
"Education abroad was worth every penny. I can speak French at an advanced to boarder line fluent level. The traveling was incredible. Every country was a different adventure with new challenges."
Andrew Richardson The Catholic University of America
"I learned that there is no "right" way to live. Everyone lives differently; there are no two cultures exactly alike. A major problem today is that many peoples believe their ways of living are superior to others when every culture is formed and adapted to its surrounding conditions and environment. There are better and more effi..."
Mary Cassada Wofford College
"It was absolutely worthwhile. The cultural immersion aspect was not as difficult as I thought it would be. I did not experience culture shock in a major way"
Georgia Meyer Haverford College
"I was able to challenge myself intellectually and socially through the classes I chose to pursue through IES (Histories and Legends of Paris, Sociology of France, Politics and Poetry of Gender in France, The Word and the Image, and French in Context). IES provided a wide array of courses to be taken at the IES Center in addition..."
Logan Stalter George Washington University
"I learned how to manage cultural norms--an hour commute to school in Japan is considered normal; hour-long train rides are normal; packed trains are normal. "
Allen Chen Occidental College
"You need to go beyond your comfort zone, but never forget your values. Through this, you definitely learn a lot more about a culture, develop on your language skills, and see who you are as a person when you are away from those you are comfortable with or use to."
A student Brandeis University
"From my internship, I learned a lot about Japanese work/life culture, I learned how to navigate the transit system, I tried new foods every day and literally was exposed to something different each day. "
Samantha G Brandeis University
"I learned to see the world through a different perspective and became a more adaptable and flexible person."
A student Trinity University
"It really helped with my French, especially speaking."
A student Trinity University
"I've gained guidance and a new appreciation for life. My experience was completely worthwhile. I would want live it all over again."
Enrique A Garcia Trinity University
"I learned a lot from my peers at the university, and loved Ecuador. The experience outside of IES was worth is, but IES Quito itself was really problematic and has some serious systemic issues. "
A student Anonymous University
"Absolutely worthwhile. I gained confidence, independence, a deeper appreciation for history, a deeper cultural understanding, and more pride for my hometown and where I'm from. I expanded my comprehension of contemporary political issues through my coursework. Finally, I learned that I'm capable of a lot more than I previously g..."
kkelly Trinity University
"I gained more confidence in traveling and dealing with difficult situations, but I would have gained that with any program. Because of the horrible program, I also gained a lot of bitterness on top of the confidence. "
