Everything we do is about the IES Abroad student.
Created in 1950, we believe in crafting unforgettable, life-changing educational adventures that go beyond our students' expectations. Every year about 6,500 study abroad students choose IES Abroad for their authentic study and intern abroad experience.
Our work starta in our Chicago headquarters and spreads across more than 130 study abroad programs in more than 30+ locations worldwide. With this network, we develop authentic global education and life-affirming cultural experiences. We believe that studying abroad should be a part of every student's academic life, and we aim to not only provide study abroad opportunities, but to consistently maintain a friendly, fun, and safe academic and cultural environment.
We believe so firmly in the power of our academically superior programs, that we actively recruit students from diverse populations and pledges more than $5 million in scholarships year after year. We are proud that our students are as diverse and exciting as the countries we study.
Through IES Internships, we offer a variety of full-time semester and summer internships in 15 locations around the world. For more than 40 years, we've provided opportunities to intern in some of the world's most exciting cities. With IES Internships, you'll have a guaranteed placement, more on-the-job hours, dedicated assistance with résumés and interviewing skills, and the ability to network with other students.

Study Abroad with IES Abroad
"I gained a lot of self confidence. Although I had a host family to help me, I had to do a lot of things on my own, including navigating a new city and mastering a new language. It was definitely worthwhile."
Ashley B Santa Clara University
"IES Abroad Nantes is an amazing program! Specifically, the host families and the program/university classes are two things I will highlight that were a huge part of everyone's day-to-day experiences. The host families are your home base: they really do welcome you in with open arms (which is rather difficult when you think about..."

"I definitely learned a lot about Japan. I thought I understood a lot of things about Japan before I left. I thought I understood the exclusivity and indirectness of the culture, among the many other attitudes that run beneath the surface of Japanese society. But there are a lot of things that you can't understand unless you go t..."
A student Haverford College
"The program overall was a great experience. It definitely changed the way that I see American culture and the "way we do things" here in America. It helps to broaden your horizons about life in general. Living in a completely different culture gives you a great opportunity to reflect on yourself and grow as a person. The aca..."
Tyler S Pennsylvania State University - University Park / Penn State
"Studying abroad has taught me a lot about myself. I am more open to the idea of living somewhere extremely different for a short time, and it definitely made me catch the travel bug. It has also made me more confident when I enter new situations, because that was something we dealt with constantly while abroad. I have a special ..."
JoAnna N Indiana University - Bloomington
"I feel comfortable speaking conversational spanish now. I was able to travel to 5 other countries, travelled by myself, tried a ton of new foods, saw some incredible buildings and museums. "
Brendan C University of Rochester
"I learned so much about myself, what it means to travel, and about Ireland. I had an amazing experience, and I would go back in a heartbeat."
Markie A University of Rochester
"I always knew that I would be studying abroad at some point during my college career. Coming in, I did not know where I wanted to go or what I wanted to do, but I knew that I wanted to explore and fulfill a dream. I chose Barcelona because of my limited knowledge in Spanish as well as the desire to be located in Europe for a sem..."
Andrew B University of Wisconsin - Madison
"Invaluable experience. World class city, friendly people, engaging classes, intelligent professors, and a launching pad to travel throughout the rest of Europe. "
Grace N University of Rochester
"I learned about a new culture and ways that different people in various countries live. I also learned how to become adaptable and deal with almost any situation I came across. The whole experience was well worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat. "
Katelynn D Hope College
"Besides the incredible amount of history and culture I learned from the 15 countries I visited, I learned most about myself. Being away from everything, I learned who I truly am and what I value. Most of all, I learned to have confidence. After all, if I can do this, I can do anything."
Bill M Indiana University - Bloomington
"I learned a lot about the history of Spain and its impact on the world. It was definitely worthwhile."
Abner A University of Rochester
"I gained a confidence in my own self-sufficiency and a lot of language skills. I also learned how to become more confident in my abilities. Overall, I would consider it worthwhile. "
Emily P Lehigh University
"Quito has a completely different pace of life than what I am used to in the U.S. Ecuadorians are never on time and value friendships and relationships with people above anything else. I really enjoyed spending 5 months in a place with a different mindset (about school, work, spending time with family, food, etc), and I have been..."

"I studied in Rabat for an entire academic year, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything! I took classes in French, took a class at University Mohammed V, learned basic Arabic, and learned so much about Moroccan culture and history. Spending the year seemed daunting in the beginning, but at the end of my first semester I was happy t..."
A student Tulane University
"I gained a new found greater desire to learn, grow, and explore. I gained best friends who have been through a lot of crucial life experiences with me. I learned to go with the flow and not take things so seriously."
Kimberly W University of Puget Sound
"I learned a lot about myself and what I am capable of. It was much more rewarding for me personally, but it also had some academic reward as well! "
A student Hope College
"I gained a greater appreciation for the world. It sounds cheesey, but I think in America we get so caught up in American politics and American issues, we forget how much else is out there. I realized how foolish I was for not knowing anything about Spanish politics when all the Spanish people knew so much about American politics..."
A student Vanderbilt University
"It was absolutely worthwhile. I gained an understanding of another country's culture and language and was able to experience first hand what it is like to live somewhere that the arts are supported. "
A student University of Hartford
"I really integrated with local culture and met some great Italian friends."
A student Brandeis University
"I learned that knowing English is a privilege and sometimes even being American is a privilege. English is everywhere. White people are loved everywhere. Brown and black people tend to be ignored. Sure, I guess."
Arianne W Wellesley College
"I learned so much about myself, other people, and the world on this program. Reflecting on my semester, I know I left Granada truly different than when I came. I also improved my Spanish and met some really wonderful people. It was absolutely worthwhile and I wish I could go back again!"
A student Grinnell College
"I learned how to problem solve in another language. It was definitely worthwhile."
A student Trinity University
"Covered all this in earlier parts of review. "
A student Duke University
"I really enjoyed the program. Freiburg is a great place. You will learn so much about German culture - it's a great immersion experience. Although in order to enhance your German, you must take the personal initiative and practice with locals. Classes were not difficult, but the course material was very interesting. Traveli..."
