Overall Experience
learned about europe - Brandeis University View Entire Review
My experience was absolutely worthwhile. I was given the opportunity to learn how to truly live on my own in a way that just moving away from home for college does not afford you. I came out of the experience feeling more independent and capable as an adult, and with a broader view of the world and a better understanding of what... - Middlebury College View Entire Review
Studying abroad gave me the opportunity to put into practice many skills I have learned in high school and college - making conscious decision, pushing myself out of my comfort zone, proactivity, work-life balance, etc. It was ABSOLUTELY worthwhile! - Middlebury College View Entire Review
How to live on your own, without "Club Midd." Worthwhile for the traveling outside of Denmark alone. Of course, Denmark was pretty great too. It was very easy and enjoyable to live there. - Middlebury College View Entire Review
I learned about the people and culture of Denmark and Scandinavia. I travelled extensively was exposed to cultures and peoples across Europe. I learned a great deal about myself; how to be self-sufficient, how to get around in a place I've never been, how to be flexible with my plans. It was absolutely a worthwhile experience an... - Trinity University View Entire Review
I became much more independent and self-sufficient. I got to learn about this amazing culture and experience it first-hand. Copenhagen is an amazing city and the perfect place for students to study abroad. The city is safe and fun, the classes are enjoyable and the people are chill. - Brandeis University View Entire Review

Career direction & better understanding of the world. definitely was - Brandeis University View Entire Review
I learned to be a planner as well as spontaneous, which sound contradictory. I learned how to plan trips and plan my time so that I was being efficient and doing all that I wanted to do. But if something came up that seemed better or if my friends decided to go to Sweden the next day I learned to do it and go with it. That was... - Colorado College View Entire Review
I learned a little Danish and I ate a little Danish, it was worth it. - Brandeis University View Entire Review
I learned how to make abroad become home and everyday since I've left Denmark, I feel a great loss in my heart. I miss my host family like I would miss my own family. I also love them like my own. It's crazy how four months abroad can change your view of yourself because I had to spend so much time reflecting as an Asian Ameri... - Brandeis University View Entire Review
I learned about independence, Danish culture and the joy of riding a bike. - Middlebury College View Entire Review
I learned so much about social democracies and that the way America is governed is not the only way for a country to be governed. I learned how to be independent and create connections with others who initially seem so different. This was the most worthwhile experience of my life! - Brandeis University View Entire Review
I learned a lot about myself while abroad: my tendencies, my values, etc. It was very worthwhile for me and now I have a Danish family I can always call upon! - Trinity University View Entire Review
I considered myself extremely independent before going abroad however being put in a place where there is a language barrier and cultural norms different than what I know forced me to become even more independent and pushed me outside of my comfort zone. - Middlebury College View Entire Review
I learned a lot about myself as a person and gained international experience required to compete in our global society - The University of Texas at Austin View Entire Review

A new language, culture, and friends. - Brandeis University View Entire Review
I feel some parts of Yes and No to the question "Would you choose the same program". I had an amazing experience, but I had a feeling that the program was a little boring and left some abroad experience to be desired. I would not have wanted to spend an entire year there, but did have the best time there & would recommend it to ... - Brandeis University View Entire Review
A student studying abroad with DIS - Danish Institute for Study Abroad: Copenhagen - Various Programs
I became a lot more confident about being independent and exploring on my own. I took classes that were really different from ones that I took at Wisconsin and I loved expanding my education that way. I also loved Scandinavia, which was a part of Europe that I had never experienced before. Talking with my host family, other stud... - University of Wisconsin - Madison View Entire Review

DIS - Study Abroad Scholarships

This merit-based award honors a beloved former DIS faculty member, Jacob Buksti, who passed away in 2016. Jacob built a strong legacy in modern Danish politics and made a deep impact on the hundreds of DIS students he taught from 2003 to 2016. Jacob served the Danish Social Democratic Party as a parliamentarian, party spokesperson, and Minister of Transportation during an impressive political career, and he was deeply devoted to sharing his work and passion with U.S. students at DIS. We offer this scholarship of up to $10,000 each semester to a deserving DIS Copenhagen or DIS Stockholm student who exhibits: A major in political science, international relations, government, public policy, economics, or a related field Passion about pursuing a career in politics An understanding of the work it takes to be actively engaged to advance yourself and your mission, interest in European/EU politics, and awareness that effective politics has many avenues A high GPA, strong personal essay, and recommendation from a professor or academic advisor Note: summer awards are not offered for this scholarship at this time.
