Overall Experience
I learned that I would like to live in Amsterdam for the rest of my life. Yes, it was extremely worthwhile. If I had to do study abroad again I would go to Amsterdam, 100%, no doubt. But, I would probably choose a different program and company to go through rather than IES Abroad. - Middlebury College View Entire Review

Completely worthwhile! I gained a sense of confidence in my own ability to be independent and organize my own travel and trips and budget my own finances like I never have before. - Wellesley College View Entire Review
I learned a lot about myself and who I am. It was extremely worthwhile - Austin College View Entire Review
I got to know myself, and I felt the most independant that I've felt in a long time. - Ithaca College View Entire Review
Most of what I learned abroad had nothing to do with academics at all. I learned more about myself and other people. I became a little more spontaneous and outgoing, and I learned how to balance working hard and having a good time. This experience didn't really change any of my plans (because I didn't really have any yet), b... - Shenandoah University View Entire Review
I learned that traveling is a real passion of mine. i learned how to interact with people from all sorts of countries and how Americans are viewed by other types of people. I realized I can get to know a foreign city all by myself in a matter of weeks and really asserted my independence. - University of Rochester View Entire Review
YES! It helped me gain lots of experience as an activist, but this wasn't helped or supported by IES or Wellesley at ALL. I did that completely on my own. - Wellesley College View Entire Review
I now have a global view of the connection between America and Europe. I would love to go back. I learned so much about how to make new friendships and experience new things. A++++ - University of Arkansas - Fayetteville View Entire Review
Past Review
It was invaluable for me to meet people of many different cultures, and talk about differences, but mostly similarities. I hope to go back for grad school because I fell in love with Amsterdam. - Wellesley College View Entire Review
I learned so much about myself. So much freedom and it was amazing. - George Washington University View Entire Review
I learned a lot about myself, and got to live in one of the world's most unique and beautiful cities. It was a worthwhile experience. - The University of Texas at Austin View Entire Review
I learned so much, it is hard to pinpoint. Coming from the Midwest and having never been out of the country, it really opened my eyes to so many new experiences. - University of Missouri - Columbia View Entire Review
I lived abroad when I was younger, so I don't feel that my cultural awareness was heightened. I do feel like I learned a lot about myself, and there were a lot of days where it was really difficult. I caught the travel bug from this experience- it really expanded my curiosity about other ways of life. - Austin College View Entire Review
This experience was amazing. Especially through the classes I was able to take with Dutch students, I was able to learn the ways in which my studies of race, ethnicity, class, and gender relate to larger contemporary issues throughout Europe. I now plan to study Dutch constructions of the "failure of multiculturalism" for my gra... - Grinnell College View Entire Review
It was absolutely worthwhile. I learned how to be more independent, I was able to take my first film class and I also took my first law class. I learned how to live on my own and cook for myself. This experience taught me not to be intimidated by the difficulty or material of a class. - Duke University View Entire Review
YES! You experience so much from other cultures and your horizons are broadened in so many ways. The Dutch people are friendly and amazing. Everyone needs to spend time abroad- you learn about another culture but even more about yourself. - Tulane University View Entire Review
YES! It was great. There of course were difficult aspect to it, but overall I really enjoyed it and would do it again. - Wellesley College View Entire Review
It was very worthwhile. It was life changing! The only reason why my experience is not a five globe rating is my disappointment with the housing and services provided by IES for the cost of the program. Also, I would have liked to meet more Dutchies, but I cannot attribute that entirely to IES. Traveling opened my eyes eve... - Wellesley College View Entire Review
It was great to see such a laid back country. I can't describe the amount of great things I did/see. - Ithaca College View Entire Review

About

Are you eager to take an independent, fresh look at the world—and at yourself? Let Amsterdam redefine your perspective. This progressive city is known for its cutting-edge contributions to the arts, business, politics, and social policy, and for its importance in the history of Europe and the world.

Our Study in Amsterdam Program takes advantage of the city’s unique balance of history and contemporary culture, and lets you structure your studies at the prestigious Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) and at the IES Abroad Center.

With a strong focus on internationalism, the UvA offers a wide range of courses for you to enroll in, including Conflict and Cultural Diversity, Globalization and International Relations, and Sociology.
You can also choose from IES Abroad’s course offerings, in studio art, Dutch language, research, and other subjects.

Amsterdam will be your classroom. Several courses include hands-on components to help you explore Amsterdam and its surroundings while learning about the city’s past and present. Study the history of Amsterdam by visiting some of the city’s historic spots, including Anne Frank’s home and the Rembrandt House. Explore the city’s well-known museums, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Stedelijk Museum. Find out more about this diverse culture by hopping on a bike and touring the city’s historic neighborhoods. Meet the people of Amsterdam and discover just how diverse they are.
