Overall Experience
I gained a broader aspect of the world. It was certainly worthwhile, as I had the opportunity to travel within Austria as well as to bordering countries, and learn about the various cultures. I also made a lot of new friends! - Brandeis University View Entire Review
it was 1000% worthwhile, I learned that you have to take advantage of your surroundings and that it's a once in a lifetime experience - Tufts University View Entire Review
Participating in the IES Vienna program was completely worthwhile. I learned so much about Viennese art, culture, and German language from the program, and made friends that I will continue to keep in touch with. - Brandeis University View Entire Review
I learned how to cook basic things (Austrian), how to dance the waltz, and mainly how to live by myself. I learned how to deal with problems that occur commonly in life and no parents are around to solve them for me... I feel rich with experience of life. It was very much worthwhile! - Trinity University View Entire Review
It was the best I made some life long friends who I still talk to regularly - Providence College View Entire Review
I was able to expand my comfort zone by studying and working in a city I had never been to before and didn't know the language. I went on adventures by myself everyday and became very independent. It was definitely worthwhile. - Cornell University View Entire Review
I think I learned a lot about people from my experience abroad. Initially I was very hopeful that I would make lots of friends abroad, but found that not to be the case. The majority of the student body was very forgettable and uninteresting and only interested in partying in Europe, and so I didn't gell with a lot of students, ... - Trinity University View Entire Review
Studying abroad has helped me to gain confidence in myself, my abilities, and my goals for the future. I am considering returning to Vienna soon to continue pursuing these goals. - Providence College View Entire Review
I am a much more understanding, patient, and confident person from this experience. My study abroad experience was defined by the abroad portion rather than the study part. Just getting to class was a new experience. There is a difference between traveling to different countries and living in a new country. Living in Vienna, I w... - Ithaca College View Entire Review
No doubt! I am now hoping to enter the Peace Corps and later work in a study abroad office because of my experience in Vienna. - Hope College View Entire Review

I know German. I am connected personally with art and music history. I am an internationally trained musician on my c.v. I made friends I'll never forget. I visited 11 cities. I am a more confident and capable person for having handled myself abroad. - Tufts University View Entire Review
My experience was incredible and worth every penny. I feel so much connected to the world now and to other cultures, I don't feel so wrapped up in my Texas suburb bubble. I was able to study Psychology in an amazing, interactive way, in the city where so many famous psychologists worked and researched. I loved all of my classes ... - Trinity University View Entire Review
I would highly recommend the teaching internships offered, where you go into Austrian schools and learn firsthand about the average life of a person who may not be too much younger than you and come to understand the similarities and differences between your life and theirs. - University of Rochester View Entire Review
You gain so much cultural knowledge, and so many skills about how to live in a completely new environment. You definitely grow as a person. - Brandeis University View Entire Review
I learned that no matter what the situation is, I will be okay. A theme from our Institute was "have personal Teflon," because you will undoubtedly have some strange situations. I was stranded in Paris, but I made it back to Vienna alright. There were some awkward "lost in translation" moments, but you don't let them stick to... - Vanderbilt University View Entire Review
I learned more about the world and broadened my perspective. - Trinity University View Entire Review
I learned more about myself as a person, friend, and musician. This was the best thing I've ever done for myself, and I made lifelong friends. - Ithaca College View Entire Review

As someone who had never been outside of the United States before, I was nervous about traveling and studying in a foreign country. When I got there, however, I completely fell in love. I have never learned so much about myself, cultures, travel, other people and societies before in my entire life. The knowledge and memories t... - Loyola University Chicago View Entire Review
Undoubtedly. One of the best experiences I'll ever have. Couldn't have asked for a better time or for better people to have experienced it with. - Villanova University View Entire Review
Vienna really impacted me, I learned so much about culture, history and music. It was nice to be studying about europe and actually being there. I also really enjoyed my internship, and the small business environment in Austria. - Trinity University View Entire Review

  • Vienna - Music: Home to an astounding number of legendary composers—from Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven to Brahms, Mahler, and Schoenberg—Vienna maintains an incredible richness of musical culture to this day. The world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Musikverein, and the Staatsoper are just a few of the many leading institutions that help make Vienna a true “city of music”—and make it the perfect location for an engaging study of Music History and Performance. The IES Abroad Vienna Music Program is ideal for students majoring or minoring in Music, and offers you the opportunity to participate in a wide selection of courses focusing on Music and European culture and society. The program is organized in conjunction with the Vienna European Society & Culture Program.

  • Vienna Summer - Music History & Performance: Located in the heart of Europe, Vienna is a city of about 1.8 million inhabitants that has, since its founding in the 3rd century, served as a bridge between a myriad of cultures. As an important crossroads between North and South, East and West, the city became a natural melting pot for new ideas. Out of this cultural richness has emerged a wealth of artistic accomplishments and innovative thinking—a heritage that we explore in our summer programs. Vienna has been home to many of history's greatest composers, from Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven to Brahms, Mahler, and Schoenberg. To this day, the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Musikverein, and the Staatsoper continue to help make Vienna a true "city of music."

  • Vienna Summer - Psychology: As the famous psychologist Carl Rogers once said, "This is where all the trouble started!" In Vienna, the birthplace of psychoanalysis and home to Sigmund Freud and numerous other legendary psychologists, you can experience both the history and practice of psychology from a unique vantage point. Explore the richness of this city’s past and present in an academic environment specially designed for the student of Psychology. The program is organized into two topics: Psychology & Society, and Health Psychology & Communication. Students examining Psychology & Society learn about the emergence of psychology in Vienna and consider closely how different methodologies today both reflect and challenge Freud's legacy. Students studying Health Psychology & Communication take a more practical approach as they explore the field of counseling, and develop skills in listening and empathy.
