Everything we do is about the IES Abroad student.
Created in 1950, we believe in crafting unforgettable, life-changing educational adventures that go beyond our students' expectations. Every year about 6,500 study abroad students choose IES Abroad for their authentic study and intern abroad experience.
Our work starta in our Chicago headquarters and spreads across more than 130 study abroad programs in more than 30+ locations worldwide. With this network, we develop authentic global education and life-affirming cultural experiences. We believe that studying abroad should be a part of every student's academic life, and we aim to not only provide study abroad opportunities, but to consistently maintain a friendly, fun, and safe academic and cultural environment.
We believe so firmly in the power of our academically superior programs, that we actively recruit students from diverse populations and pledges more than $5 million in scholarships year after year. We are proud that our students are as diverse and exciting as the countries we study.
Through IES Internships, we offer a variety of full-time semester and summer internships in 15 locations around the world. For more than 40 years, we've provided opportunities to intern in some of the world's most exciting cities. With IES Internships, you'll have a guaranteed placement, more on-the-job hours, dedicated assistance with résumés and interviewing skills, and the ability to network with other students.
How will study abroad redefine you? We can't wait to find out.

Study Abroad with IES Abroad
"Absolutely worth it and I learned a lot about myself as an American in a foreign country."
Christina H Wellesley College
"I gained conversational German skills, life-long friends, and a deeper understanding of the challenges of international relations. I better appreciate the struggle of learning a new language and working with others to better our world. It was most definitely work it!"
A student University of Rochester
"I learned how to be independent and how to adjust to a different culture. I was very homesick at first but I overcame that and became very comfortable in Paris. It was definitely worthwhile to become more independent and comfortable on my own. I grew as a person while studying abroad. "
Elizabeth B Connecticut College
"I gained a confidence in myself, not only with my Spanish language skills, but also in my abilities to be able to accomplish things and grow in a completely different environment in which everything was completely foreign. "
Meredith B Macalester College
"This question is difficult to answer, as I feel like I've learned so much about Amsterdam and myself at the same time. Studying abroad allowed me to gain an understanding of what the world is like beyond the borders of America, which is something I think a lot of people start to forget, or just don't pay attention to. It was def..."
Charlotte W North Carolina State University / NC State
"I gained a greater sense of confidence and independence. London is a huge city, so not only did I have to embrace a new culture, I had to learn how to live in a fast-paced big city. I also gained a new sense of self and way to perceive the world around me. After being abroad, I can look through my world through a totally new per..."
Campbell N Trinity College
"IES Abroad Fall 2015 was the best semester of my life. I highly recommend that everyone go abroad for a semester at some point during their time at college. I was lucky enough to spend a semester abroad in Paris through IES and it is a program that I would highly recommend to other students. I would recommend it for so many reas..."
Nicholas B Lehigh University
"I actually learned a lot about myself. Mainly, I learned that is a waste of time to judge people for being exactly who they are. Example: Why get mad at our Italian teachers for they more relaxed syllabus when that's how they've always done it and it works? Enjoy the new pace and learn as much as you can. Why get frustrated at a..."
Sarah B Saint Olaf College
"I gained language skills, an understanding of local culture, a broader understanding of the world, travel experience, friends, and many learning experiences from my time abroad. I think that it was one of the most worthwhile things that I have ever done. "
A student The Catholic University of America
"I learned so much about myself and the culture in which I lived and grew. It also really gave me a great opportunity to reflect on my own culture that I brought with me. It was the best 4 months of my life. "
Ben B Grinnell College
"Aside from learning a lot about Irish history and culture, I also learned that I am capable of living and surviving on my own in a foreign country. Before traveling to Ireland, I had never been out of the States, and I had never really traveled alone, so just going there was a huge step for me. Now that it's over, I feel like I ..."
Lisa S University of Iowa
"As cliche as it sounds this program helped me find myself again. It was 200% worthwhile and I would do it again if I could."
Monica Q Babson College
"I learned how to be more independent and become more confident with myself. Yes, it was worthwhile."
A student Ithaca College
"I learned to be more flexible and view issues and every-day life from more than one perspective. I learned to become adaptable and see the bigger picture, rather than focus on the smaller details."
Scott O Wheaton College, MA
"I grew a lot as a person. I think that my experience abroad helped me see things in a different way but also put every situation in perspective and learn how to rationalize, as well as live in a more relaxed way. Not only did I learn many things academically, I also had one of the most incredible social and cultural experience o..."
Margot N Duke University
"When I studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, I went out of my comfort zone and got the most out of the experience. I learned about the culture in Argentina and how people there are so passionate by talking as much as I could with locals and people who have lived in Argentina for a long time. I learned so much about how Ar..."
A student Santa Clara University
"I improved my language abilities greatly during staying with host family and studying in Nanzan and passed N1 level in Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Field trips were great, and dinners provided were just beyond my expectation! The courses provided by Nanzan were satisfying that Japanese Traditional Art was offered, which I..."
Lang M Mount Holyoke College
"Overall, IES was an amazing experience. The cliche saying 'study abroad changed my life,' is true. While I found the classes to be rather dull at times, the other aspects of the program compensated greatly. The planned program excursions and dinners were educational, fun, and a great way to meet the other students. I found t..."
Hayley P Pomona College
"I learned about French language and culture and how I want to interact with the world as a global citizen. "
Tessa A Pacific Lutheran University
"I learned how to be independent and how to immerse myself in a completely new program. The most important lesson I took away from my time abroad was how much I have in common with people of essentially "different walks of life". I made incredible friends and I've become much more self-aware. This experience was definitely worthw..."
Hannah C University of Rochester
"I had an amazing time in Freiburg and the region. My German language skills improved, thanks to formal instruction and casual conversation. My travel skills improved, thanks to excursions in the Black Forest, Munich, Berlin, France, and Switzerland. The program office was very supportive and helpful as I adjusted to life here. I..."
Kristen A University of Minnesota - Twin Cities
"I gained a lot of confidence from my study abroad experience. In myself as an individual and as well as in my Spanish. I learned a lot about myself and the experience made me feel powerful because I was a young woman who went out on my own into an unknown country, and I completely conquered it. I fell in love with Spain and I wa..."
Shada T University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
"Studying abroad through IES at the University of Sydney was an incredible experience. From the moment I stepped off the plane I was in love with Australia. Switching up the environment in which you live and learn completely changes your worldview and provides you with opportunities that you never knew were out there. In additio..."
Jen F Ithaca College
"As cheesy and overplayed as it is, studying abroad in Amsterdam has changed my frame of reference for everything from academics to international relations. I would repeat the semester in a heartbeat."
A student Oberlin College
"I gained more of a sense of confidence within my learning and development of another culture and language, as well as a more global outlook. I'd like to say I'm working on my way to be a global citizen, one who sees many POV's and understands cultures of other places and people. Yes, it was worthwhile!"
