Everything we do is about the IES Abroad student.
Created in 1950, we believe in crafting unforgettable, life-changing educational adventures that go beyond our students' expectations. Every year about 6,500 study abroad students choose IES Abroad for their authentic study and intern abroad experience.
Our work starta in our Chicago headquarters and spreads across more than 130 study abroad programs in more than 30+ locations worldwide. With this network, we develop authentic global education and life-affirming cultural experiences. We believe that studying abroad should be a part of every student's academic life, and we aim to not only provide study abroad opportunities, but to consistently maintain a friendly, fun, and safe academic and cultural environment.
We believe so firmly in the power of our academically superior programs, that we actively recruit students from diverse populations and pledges more than $5 million in scholarships year after year. We are proud that our students are as diverse and exciting as the countries we study.
Through IES Internships, we offer a variety of full-time semester and summer internships in 15 locations around the world. For more than 40 years, we've provided opportunities to intern in some of the world's most exciting cities. With IES Internships, you'll have a guaranteed placement, more on-the-job hours, dedicated assistance with résumés and interviewing skills, and the ability to network with other students.

Study Abroad with IES Abroad
"I learned how to be independent and how to immerse myself in a completely new program. The most important lesson I took away from my time abroad was how much I have in common with people of essentially "different walks of life". I made incredible friends and I've become much more self-aware. This experience was definitely worthw..."

"I had an amazing time in Freiburg and the region. My German language skills improved, thanks to formal instruction and casual conversation. My travel skills improved, thanks to excursions in the Black Forest, Munich, Berlin, France, and Switzerland. The program office was very supportive and helpful as I adjusted to life here. I..."

"I gained a lot of confidence from my study abroad experience. In myself as an individual and as well as in my Spanish. I learned a lot about myself and the experience made me feel powerful because I was a young woman who went out on my own into an unknown country, and I completely conquered it. I fell in love with Spain and I wa..."

"Studying abroad through IES at the University of Sydney was an incredible experience. From the moment I stepped off the plane I was in love with Australia. Switching up the environment in which you live and learn completely changes your worldview and provides you with opportunities that you never knew were out there. In additio..."

"As cheesy and overplayed as it is, studying abroad in Amsterdam has changed my frame of reference for everything from academics to international relations. I would repeat the semester in a heartbeat."
A student Oberlin College
"I gained more of a sense of confidence within my learning and development of another culture and language, as well as a more global outlook. I'd like to say I'm working on my way to be a global citizen, one who sees many POV's and understands cultures of other places and people. Yes, it was worthwhile!"
Gabrielle M Austin College
"Friends, language skills, better understanding of the culture, so much that's it hard to list. It was definitely worthwhile because I feel like I grew so much from the experience. "
Dani G Trinity University
"I learned a lot about myself as this was my first time living on my own. Also learned how to bike a whole lot better which is definitely a skill to hold on to. Became a better traveler, came out of my shell, and overall just a great personal growth and cultural experience. "

"I learned a lot while abroad. I learned all of the cliche things like to step outside of my comfort zone and to be confident because "you know more than you think." Although they are cliche, they are things I will carry with me for the rest of my life. "
Vanessa M Saint Josephs University
"Everyone is different, how you choose to interact with people is up to you. It was a worthwhile study abroad even though it was short."
A student Wabash College
"As a student majoring in Spanish and International Relations, studying in Madrid was a like a capstone to my undergraduate studies. "I learned about myself as a person more than I ever thought possible. I also learned how to explore a city by myself, an incredibly valuable lesson. I learned that I can tackle a city on my own, that I can live abroad for an extended period of time. I drastically improved my French, and had an amazing time doing it. I cannot exp..."

"I learned what it was like to live abroad and it proved to myself that I could adjust and be happy in a completely different setting. It taught me to be more open to new experiences to care less about what others think about me. Berliners really do things for themselves and aren't worried about others' perceptions of them. My ti..."

"I learned that I was capable of taking care of myself in another country. I can read maps and figure out train/bus/flight schedules. I can get through airport security. I can be independent. "
Grainne D Anonymous University
"Oh my goodness I learned how to be myself and not worry about what other people think of me, and I learned so much more about international relations and making friends and growing as a person. I could go on forever, but yes it was so worth it. "

"While abroad, I learned to view the world from a non-western perspective. I learned to compare and contrast inequalities you learn in the classroom with inequalities you see every day. I learned to take risks, to live in the moment, and to try things outside of my comfort zone. It was so incredibly worthwhile."
Adrianna S University of South Carolina - Columbia
"The economy of Japan is different from the US and it was interesting how people spent money and the vending machines are so convenient. Making friends abroad is one of the best things there is so being able to have international friends now is amazing. "
A student Wabash College
"Yes, it was worthwhile. I learned lot of Spanish. My reading comp and writing improved drastically and I got much better at engaging in everyday conversations (even if my grammar is still horrendous), which brought me back to why I wanted to learn the language in the first place. I learned how to navigate a quirky public transpo..."
Christiana Z Trinity University
"Incredible travel experience and cultural immersion if you seek it out! I learned a massive amount about the European Union but more importantly, about myself and my ability to navigate an entirely other continent independently and with confidence. This experience was way more than I expected and is absolutely worthwhile."
Marisa O Bowdoin College
"My abroad experience gave me the chance to learn more about myself and to discover more about the world. It allowed me to immerse myself in a foreign language and come out being almost fluent. It was by far worthwhile. "

"The education I got and hold most closely are the lessons I learned outside of the classroom. Being able to travel, live in a different country, and learn about a different culture have allowed me to have a better understanding of what it means to be a global citizen. This now can be applied to me studies. "
