Middlebury Schools Abroad is a program provider offering 32 abroad programs. Programs offered include Study Abroad and Intensive Language abroad programs in 18 countries such as Chile, The United Kingdom, United States, and Jordan.
Participants in the Middlebury C.V. Starr Schools Abroad don’t just study a language—they live it.
Many of our students major in disciplines other than foreign languages, yet all bring a level of proficiency that supports their commitment to language and cultural immersion. They sign and honor the Middlebury Language Pledge because they want the greatest possible challenge in a study abroad program and an authentic experience in every respect; academic, social, and even professional.
Participants take courses in most subjects, often with host country students, intern or engage in volunteer work, and live with a family or local students. Indeed, at every juncture of their time abroad, students have the chance to "live the language" and immerse themselves in the host culture.
Middlebury also offers intensive summer immersion programs in ten languages, as well as graduate programs in eight of these languages. For graduate studies, visit http://www.middlebury.edu/ls/grad_programs/ and for Language Schools, visit http://www.middlebury.edu/ls/.

"I learned how to be uncomfortable and work through the feeling. Culturally it is important to learn what it is like to be an outsider and not be 100% comfortable speaking the language, but still having to apply it. "

A student Grinnell College
"I gained a greater perspective on my home country, as well as the country in which the program was located. Given the chance, I'd do it all over again without hesitation."
Lena P Sewanee: The University of the South
"My experience abroad had its ups and downs, but it was worthwhile. One course and professor kept me motivated, the Middlebury Center helped me feel supported, while my host family taught me what kind of people and environment I don’t thrive in. I came away knowing both who I admire and what I want to avoid—invaluable lessons."
A student Mount Holyoke College
"The highs and lows of study abroad really do vary, and the lows can be really challenging. After the initial honeymoon phase of excitement and newness wore off, I struggled with feelings of isolation and frustration. The language barrier also magnified the feeling of being detached from the city/culture. In addition, study abroa..."
A student Pomona College
"I left China at a young age, so this was a very personally fulfilling semester as I was able to see many of my relatives. I challenged myself to explore the unknown corners and reality of Chinese people with a focus towards migrant workers on the outskirts or Beijing. I had loved Chinese literature for a long time, so it was def..."

"On a scale of 1-10 from how I knew russian I was at a 4 I think, and now I am at a 7. For people interested in learning about Central Asia and for really getting good at Russian at any cost, this is the best program."

"100% worthwhile. I dream of going back to this country every day."
Francesca G Tufts University
"I learned a lot about myself and the environments that I enjoy living and working in -- I thought Oxford's architecture was beautiful, but I did find myself missing the green space at my home institution and where I grew up. I also learned that I like being in a classroom environment/academic setting that involves interacting wi..."

"It was super worthwile, I learned about a different culture and part of the world, and in how to be there, what it means to be myself."
Elena A Wellesley College
"I learned that while I appreciate rigor and learned a lot through my tutorials, I also really value interdisciplinary learning, group discussions with other students, and hands-on learning outside of the classroom. I'm glad to have experienced the tutorial system, but my main lesson from my experience abroad is that it's not the..."
