University Information
Austin College's Center for Global Learning facilitates Semester Abroad Studies and JanTerms. If a student would like to spend a semester abroad with Austin College, the he/she should stop by our office (Wright Campus Center #204) to begin the process. It is extremely important to go through the process in the office, otherwise the College will be unable to send the student's financial aid to the program and the student will need to withdraw from Austin College during their semester or year abroad. The Center's goal is to make each student's experience abroad a meaningful and engaging experience. In order for that to happen, students are required to go through the process in place at the Center.
We look forward to working with you and please read about other student's reviews and experiences at the different programs and locations that can be found at Abroad101.
Important Dates and Deadlines
As of right now, there are no firm deadlines in place for you to complete the Abroad101 Survey. However, before we can post your transcript from your sojourn abroad, you must complete the Abroad101 Survey and interview with the director (Truett Cates).
Thank you very much for your help and cooperation with this. We look forward to hearing about your time and experiences abroad!
"Completely worth it. I learned so much about another culture and would love to return. "
Kinsey W Austin College
"My study abroad experience was completely worthwhile, but I would definitely do a different program or make sure that I was much better prepared the next time around. I was part of the reason that my experience was so frustrating and better preparation would have helped me immensely. But I still say, do it and own your experienc..."

"Yes. I gained greater insight all over my European travels and improved my Spanish."
Keyavash H Austin College
"I learned to really open my eyes and be open to other cultures and people. The study abroad made me realize I really want to focus my studies around Latin America and made me realize I need to go to a grad school that will allow me to do that. "

"One thing only: after I studied abroad in Mexico I have come to one conclusion, I moving to Mexico after I graduate in May 2011!!!"
Daniela N Austin College
"I became more confident, not only in my language skills, but also in myself. I learned a lot about myself and my culture, as well as French culture, that I hadn't thought about before. It was truly a rewarding experience. I hope to return to France, someday soon."
Meredith P Austin College
"It taught me a lot but I went through a lot of difficult experiences to get to the point where I grew."
Lesley W Austin College
"My experience has made me much more culturally aware and made me realize not to make generalizations or stereotypes and people of different culture. I was able to travel to different countries and see beautiful museums which I would not have been able to do unless abroad, that contributed to my experience greatly. My art history..."

"Australia is very similar to the United States. There is still materialism, consumerism, capitalist markets and so on. Their histories are very similar also, with the English exploring the land, chasing off or socially integrating the Indigenous, as well as changing the landscape. So by learning more about the way Australia came..."

"MY ABROAD EXPERIENCE WAS DEFINITELY WORTHWHILE AND I WOULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN IN A HEARTBEAT. MY EXPERIENCE IN SOUTH AFRICA TAUGHT ME TO BE MORE ACCEPTING AND OPEN-MINDED. SOUTH AFRICA ALSO MADE ME MORE INTERESTED IN POLITICS BOTH DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL. "
ASHLEY F Austin College
"My study abroad experience was definitely worthwhile. I gained a lot of confidence in my German abilities and had some amazing times. Meeting people, making friendships in another language is such a rewarding experience, I highly recommend it. "
Katherine W Austin College
"I had a great time, learned alot about about other's and myself, and wouldn't give up that time for anything."
Ian W Austin College
"It was an amazing experience. I feel like really grew from it. It made me a more independent person, I was so used to things being easy at home but I really had to learn to do everything for myself. I loved being put into that situation. I learned to appreciate different types of art, theatre and the people around me. The experi..."

"It was very worthwhile. I loved that it gave me a new view of the world, and that I got to meet so many new people and gain so much personal insight while I was away. I would do it again in a heartbeat, and I was really happy with all of my experiences there."
Andrew K Austin College
"It was worthwhile. Of course it changed me and increased my cultural awareness; it would be silly if it didn't. I learned that Central and Eastern European History and Politics are two of the most interesting subjects I've encountered and plan to study them in the future. I thought I wanted to, but I was very unfamiliar with the..."

"I had the experience of a lifetime. I wish that I could go back and do it all over again. I had so much fun and learned a ton. I matured a lot while I was there and gained a lot of independence. I traveled to Spain expecting to learn about Spain and parts of Europe, but I found that I learned a lot about the US as well. I t..."

"You become of aware of the Catalan culture immediately. My experience has made me think of how amazing it is to live in a place for an academic year, and how we adapt. I want to go back as of now. I want to live there some day in the future; it's where I feel the most content. The program is just a means to get there, to take co..."

"Definitely a worthwhile experience. I gained alot of understanding about economics and learned how much your group of friends matters in defining how you experience your life. So the biggest lesson I learned was that the people you are around can completely change an experience."
Allen W Austin College
"There are a lot of little things about New Zealand that I'll remember from my study abroad experience, like tea with my host family, exploring Christchurch, getting to know everyone else from my program, etc. Study abroad is also a fantastic opportunity personal growth; your family is literally on the other side of the planet! ..."

" While we all occupy a particular place in a particular social and cultural setting, we are all quite similar. We all occupy the same planet, breathe the same air, and look up at the same sky. Prior to my departure, I expected to be confronted with significantly different social conventions, cultural barriers, etc... This was..."

"Studying abroad was the best decision I made in college. Learning to adjust to such culture shock and going through such nerve wrecking experiences at the end of the day was so much fun. Looking back, I learned alot about myself, and being independent. The Spanish culture is so awesome, and in particular the Catalan culture in B..."

"It was totally worthwhile, if I could do it again, I wouldn't change a thing. It certainly opens your eyes to a different way of life, and I have found myself incorporating little things from Spain because I like the way they approach certain things, but I retained the way I do other things because I feel like I enjoy it my way ..."

"yes it was. I learned alot, but to me personally, I would have wanted morem of a culture shock. The Swiss culture wasn't much different from American Culture. In that respect I would have wanted a different location, but apart from that, I had a good time. "
Preetha S Austin College
"The improval of my spanish and being self sufficient were my two biggest gains from this program. Personally, I think studying abroad anywhere will give you this experience if the country does not speak your native language. My only caution would be to students going to Spain: the grading system is much harder here in some insta..."
